FAQ

Who is Michael Foley?
He is the founder and conceptual mastermind behind the Summer Show project.  In 1989, he found himself pouring coffee in an espresso bar in San Francisco when he was quite surprised to be asked to join the staff at Fraenkel Gallery.  After a 6 year education with the gallery working with artists like Lee Friedlander, Richard Misrach, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Adam Fuss he moved to New York and continued working with gallerists including Howard Greenberg and Yancey Richardson.  In 2002 he began teaching at the International Center of Photography, the School of Visual Arts and Parsons.  In 2004, he founded FOLEYgallery located in Chelsea, one floor above the Aperture Foundation.  He is one of the co-founders of the photography study center The Exhibition Lab with Sasha Wolf.

Who can I contact with my questions?
Please do not contact the gallery or the panelists directly.  Contacting any of the panelists directly to inform them that you are submitting work will disqualify you from the review process.  Play fair. Please direct all questions to info@thesummershowproject.com.

How do I upload my images?
Your image must be no more than 1000 pixels wide or 700 pixels high and 72dpi, and must be a .jpeg/.jpg extension. If you continue to have trouble, email us at info@thesummershowproject.com.

How many photographs can I submit?
Please submit 3 photographs.  No more, no less.

Is there an entry fee?
Yes.  Reap the benefits of being an early bird.  If you submit your application by October 1, 2010 the entry fee is only $45.  After that, you will still have time to submit for $60 by entering by the October 15, 2010 deadline.

When will the Summer Show Project Exhibition take place?
The Summer Show Project Exhibition will open with a reception for the artists in the summer of 2011. Exact date for the reception and exhibition, TBA.

Can I send my materials in the mail?
No. We will only be reviewing applications online. Please submit all materials online.

What kind of work are you looking at?

Photography only, no mixed media.

What format should my images be?
We only accept digital files with .jpg or .jpeg.

How will the panel review submissions?
The panel reviews your work on screen from their own computers.  Each curator reviews your work independently of one another.  Your name will not be linked with your images during this process.  Once the 8 photographers are chosen, each reviewer will receive a CD with all of your submitted images AND your name so they will know who they were looking at.

Should I submit a statement along with my images and application?
Yes. A brief statement, no more than 100 words, summarizing your work should be included.

I live outside the United States, can I still submit?
Yes, we are interested in reviewing as wide a range of photographers as possible. Please be aware that you will be responsible for shipping the work to and from the gallery.  Your work must be "ready to hang."

If I am selected, when will I be notified?
We will post the names of the 8 photographers that have been selected on the home page on December1, 2010.  We will then contact each of the 8 directly to give further details.
